How many entrepreneurs launch ad campaigns without knowing how many sales they need to break even? The answer: almost all of them. And this explains why most campaigns get shut down after two weeks.

The break-even point is the minimum number of conversions (or minimum ROAS) that makes the campaign not lose money. Calculating it takes 5 minutes — and saves you weeks of burned budget.

The numbers you need

  • Sale price: what the customer pays ($97)
  • Variable cost: what it costs you to serve that customer ($27)
  • Gross margin: price - variable cost ($97 - $27 = $70)
  • Monthly ad budget: how much you can spend ($500)

Calculation 1: Break-even ROAS

Break-even ROAS is the minimum ROAS to not lose money:

Break-even ROAS = Sale price / Gross margin

With our numbers: $97 / $70 = 1.39×

Every dollar spent on ads must generate at least $1.39 in revenue to break even.

Calculation 2: Minimum number of sales

With $500 budget and $70 gross margin:

Minimum sales = Budget / Gross margin = $500 / $70 = 7.14 → 8 sales

You need at least 8 sales per month to break even on that budget.

Calculation 3: Maximum sustainable CPA

The maximum Cost per Acquisition you can afford:

Max CPA = Gross margin = $70

If your CPA exceeds $70, you're losing money on every sale. Note: this is the theoretical maximum — in practice you want to stay well below this to generate real profit.

Calculation 4: Required conversion rate

If average CPC is $0.80 and max CPA is $70:

Required CR = CPC / Max CPA = $0.80 / $70 = 1.14%

Your funnel must convert at least 1.14% of visitors into paying customers. If historical CR is 0.5%, the funnel can't sustain that CPC.

How to use these numbers

Before launching any campaign, calculate:

  1. Break-even ROAS
  2. Minimum sales/month
  3. Maximum sustainable CPA
  4. Required CR given estimated CPC
